Things to do in Monticello

Canyonlands National Park
Visit Utah's largest National Park, world-renowned for its four-wheel drive vehicle, white water rafting and mountain bike routes. Do not miss the Maze District, a jumbled stone playground, which requires backcountry use permits. Visitor's Centers are open year round and a reservations office is also located on site. Located 22 miles north of Monticello. Call 435-259-7164 for more information.

Horse Head Peak
More than a century ago cowboys in the area saw a horse's head and ears formed by the trees and shadows and terrain on the east side of the Abajo Mountains. Since then, Horse Head Peak has become a Southeastern Utah landmark. Locals claim you can see it from any spot in town.

Manti-La Sal National Forest
This Forest consists of three mountain blocks located in Central, Eastern and Southeastern Utah. Cross-country skiing, hiking and mountain climbing are popular here. This forest also serves as the scenic backdrop to State and National parks in the desert lands of Southeastern Utah. Narrow canyons and broad rolling ridges covered with aspen and spruce characterize the Manti Division. Excellent fishing is available throughout the forest. Call 435-637-2817 for more information.

Mesa Verde National Park
This Park is a stunning compilation of more than 3,900 documented archaeological sites. The park's most famous features are the numerous, tiered Anasazi cliff dwellings tucked beneath the mesa tops. The park offers extensive interpretive displays on ancient Pueblo cultures and ranger-led hikes. Call (970) 529-4465 for more information.

Old Log Church
This replica of the original, which was built in 1888, has been constructed in Pioneer Park in downtown Monticello. The site also has a faithful reproduction of a typical pioneer-era cabin.

The Historic Barn Museum
